More Information (KSJE 90.9 FM is not responsible for external websites)
By the early 1950s Cherry was playing with jazz musicians in Los Angeles. Cherry became well known in 1958 when he performed and recorded with Ornette Coleman. Pepper also achieved notoriety for his compositions combining elements of jazz and Native American music. Don Cherry and Ornette Coleman encouraged Pepper to reflect his roots and heritage and incorporate it into his jazz playing and composition. Anderson
