Música Antigua de Albuquerque will perform "A Musical Coloring Book," a concert exploring colors and their meanings in music of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Purple was the color of royalty, as was gold, which also could represent glory and truth. White was associated with purity and innocence, while black had negative connotations like death, ignorance, evil and sin. Green was the color of spring, when nature once again is in bloom. Color was important in coats of arms, in painting, and in wine. Ideals of feminine beauty also incorporated color, as in blond hair, red lips and rosy cheeks. The performances will include both vocal and instrumental pieces, and will feature accompaniment by period instruments, including violas da gamba, recorders, shawm, vielles, rebec, vihuela de mano and lute, as well as some more unusual instruments like the gemshorn and cornemuse. The musicians of Música Antigua are Dennis Davies-Wilson, Ruth Helgeson, Hovey Corbin, David McGuire, Art Sheinberg and Colleen Sheinberg.
